Traffic congestion, environmental pollution, the increase of private vehicles, and the slow development of public transport are the challenges that have occurred during the development of transport in Vietnam and the other countries in East Asia. How to minimise these challenges is the main objective to be discussed at the ongoing conference in Ho Chi Minh City.

This year’s conference, themed ‘Vision and Action Programme for Safe, Green and Integrated Transport”, has attracted the participation of more than 800 delegates including transport experts and researchers from 32 countries.

Speaking at the event, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Ngoc Dong said that a safe, green and integrated transport system should be developed to meet the demand of the people amid the negative impacts of transport on the environment.

Dong expressed his hope that the Vietnamese transport experts would work closely with their colleagues in East Asia to put forth suitable and feasible solutions to realise the development goals of the transport sector of Vietnam.

The four-day event will feature 100 discussion sessions, including eight special sessions discussing the hot issues of large cities, such as construction planning, the development of safe and green transport systems, attraction of investment in urban railways, restriction of personal vehicles, and the application of information technology in transport and public transport.

During the discussion sessions, experts are expected to share their experience and give solutions to improve and deal with any shortcomings in the urban transport system, which will become the basis for Vietnam to consult, in a bid to develop the urban transport infrastructure in Vietnam.
